Youths blow up oil pipeline in Delta

As soldiers burst pipeline vandalism

Protesting youths of Okpai community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State have blown up an oil pipeline following a faceoff between them and a multinational oil company operating in the area.
The youths also set four vehicles ablaze and seized 11 other trucks belonging to the company, Sterling Global, before the arrival of solders who arrested a youth leader.

Already, officials of National oil Spill Protection and Response Agency have arrived at the scene of the damaged pipe to assess the level of spill.
The peaceful protest last weekend, by women and youths of Okpai community against the destruction of their road built by Agip Oil Company many years ago by Sterling was however, hijacked by youths.
They were also demanding the reconstruction of the road and general development of Okpai.
The deputy speaker in the state house of Assembly, Honourable Friday Osanebi, however, brokered peace on Tuesday, between the community and the oil company.
Meanwhile, suspected hoodlums, on Tuesday, made a futile attempt to blow up more oil and gas pipelines around Odidi fields during the coronation ceremony of Williams N. S. Ogoba as the 26th Pere (King) of Gbaramatu kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
Unconfirmed report said the daredevil hoodlums were repelled by gallant soldiers keeping vigils at the oil fields in the creeks.
It was also gathered that there were casualties on both sides, as military operatives successfully repelled the attempted destruction of more major oil pipelines around Odidi creeks.
But a chief from the kingdom, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, who is the Bebenowei (Chief Mobiliser) of Gbaramatu kingdom, gave credence to the report.
He insinuated during the coronation that enemies of the Ijaw kingdom had planned for the blow-up to further paint the Ijaws in bad light.
