Your Excellency,
It is my desire to glorify God, on your
behalf, through whose grace and mercy you are where you are today. As a
non-residential indigene of Ekiti State whose view is completely devoid
of any political undertone, it behoves me to let you have a feeling of
the actual state of mind of Ekiti people at the moment vis-a-vis your
action or inaction.
Like any other ambitious person, I opine
you aspired to govern Ekiti State because of all, some or at least one
of the following reasons: 1. You believe you are competent in all
ramifications to man the mantle leadership given the desired dividends
of democracy to Ekiti people; 2. You are convinced you have what it
takes to improve the lot of the people you are out to serve; 3. You
believe you are a team leader who will work assiduously and harmoniously
with others in your cabinet to move the state forward by providing the
enabling environment suitable for people to work and obtain their basic
needs of life, among others.
If the above reasons are anything to go
by, then it is important to find out critically if you have indeed met
the expectations of Ekiti people in this regard. Your Excellency, it may
interest you to inquire into the imperative of this piece. Believe it
or not, an average Ekiti worker today is not happy with your government.
Why? You subject them to hunger by not paying their salaries up to
date. We got to know the last month you paid them was November 2015. Of
course, a hungry man is an angry man. Perhaps, it is not to your
knowledge that your admirers and teeming supporters are presently
questioning the rationale for voting you in. Those who were opposed to
your candidature are similarly singing a different song.
If salaries are owed three to four
months in a state like Ekiti, which is among the least industrialised in
the country, then the major means of livelihood of the people has been
jeopardised and significantly tampered with. The multiplier effect is
enormous. It adversely affects everybody: the old, the young,
schoolchildren, the jobless and all.
Your Excellency, it is obvious to all
Nigerians you are, as of today, the most vocal critic of the ruling
party especially the President. Yet, situations back home require timely
surgical operations. It automatically calls for your urgent attention
to put things in order. You need to take prompt actions capable of
substituting gloomy faces all over the place with smiling faces. It is
generally believed if 20 per cent of energy you dissipate in criticising
policies of the opposition party is diverted to improving the lot of
the Ekiti people, things would have been better of.
Recently, we watched on television how
some of your party members castigated your policy of doing things purely
your own way without carrying them along. They accused you of taking
all the decisions yourself. Kindly bear in mind however two or more
heads are better than one. After all, a tree doesn’t make a forest. A
regular mind rubbing with your party members as well as your cabinet
members may fish out relevant suggestions on what can be done to pay the
state workers salary. As lofty as the idea of openly distributing food
items to the highly impoverished citizens appears to be, prompt payment
of their salaries is indeed a far better alternative. In any case, a
significant percentage of the Ekiti State workers will certainly feel
insulted to be identified with open place distribution of food items.
The message being communicated in a nutshell is clear: Give utmost
priority to paying Ekiti State workers their salaries while drawing your
scale of preference. If you are unable to embark on any capital project
but are up to date in the payment of workers’ salaries, you are likely
to be voted the best governor of the year.
Yours,
Matthew Adeleye
